Well the needles that acupunture uses are effective but the actual art of actupuncture may not be. Acupuncture is based on an old Chinese "map" which pre-determines where to put the needles. IMS (intramuscular stimulation) is a much better root to go. The 3 to 4 inch needles are put into your tense muscles and the muscles spazums around it. Then the muscles releases and stretches out which lenthens it and it becomes no longer tense. Keep in mind that most articals say it is a mild discomfort I beg to differ the tighter the muscles the more pain. I just had a 3rd treatment today and it HURT! It works well tho i felt much looser after even my first treatment. IMS can be done at most Physiotherapy clinics they do however have to be certified by Dr. Gunn's school make 100% sure of this! Or that they have taken his course. For reference Dr. Gunn is a doctor from Vancouver BC Canada and teaches at various locations around the world he has a school to teach IMS in Washington state I believe if not Washington its in Oregon.
References :
http://www.istop.org/ims.html

Acupuncture can be an effective way to help with numerous issues including neck and low back pain, stress, headaches, chronic pain, PMS, etc. There are different approaches to acupuncture including medical acupuncture and TCM (traditional Chinese medicine) based acupuncture. You need to find someone who is certified (MD, DC, osteopath, TCM practitioner) in your area, sometimes referrals from friends are a good source too. Good luck.
